Plastic pollution is a major environmental challenge in least developed and lower-middle countries. In contexts of chronical deficiency of formal waste management services, an extensive informal sector of waste pickers has been historically involved in collecting, recycling and transforming plastic waste. By so doing these grassroots initiatives contribute to reducing our carbon footprint, recovering resources, improving environmental conditions. A comparative study between East Africa and Latin America, and between least developed (Tanzania, Rwanda), low-middle-income (Kenya) and middle-income countries (Argentina, Brazil) will be presented and discussed.
